Resting in the Revealed Mind of God

Standing Before the Infinite Mind of God

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?” (Rom. 11:34). The answer implied by this rhetorical question is clear: our limited human reason cannot possibly probe the infinite mind of God.

Receiving What God Has Chosen to Reveal

We know His mind only as He reveals His thoughts to us. Moses expressed this truth plainly: “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law” (Deut. 29:29).

The “secret things” God chooses to reveal are conveyed through the recorded “words of this law,” first written down by Moses and later given through David, Isaiah, John, Paul, and other God-called apostles and prophets.

Treasuring the Finished Word of God

When the final record was transcribed in the Book of Revelation, carrying us through God’s plan for all the ages yet to come, His revelation of these selected secret things was complete. It was then closed with a serious warning not to delete anything from it or add anything to it (Rev. 22:18–19).

Resting in the Mystery of His Will

Even so, God has not chosen to reveal every detail of His purposes in creating the universe. It was simply His will to create, and faith learns to rest there.

Created for His Pleasure and Glory

One day, the testimony around His throne will be: “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created” (Rev. 4:11).

The prophet Isaiah, speaking especially of the future restoration of the dispersed nation of Israel, records God’s words: “Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him” (Isa. 43:7).

Rejoicing in the Riches of His Grace

There is deep comfort in remembering that God has not called us to understand everything, but to trust Him in what He has graciously revealed. As we stand before the mystery of His infinite wisdom, Scripture turns our hearts away from speculation and toward worship, humility, and faith.

Rejoicing in the Riches of His Grace

Speaking of Christian believers in the ages to come, the Apostle Paul says that we have been saved through Christ so that God might display “the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus” (Eph. 2:7).

Sharing His Creation as Image-Bearers

These glimpses may not explain every detail of God’s great purpose in creation, but they do reveal that His purposes flow from His nature of love and grace. He has created a mighty and seemingly boundless cosmos, filled with fascinating and complex systems, and then created us “in his image” (Gen. 1:26), that we might share it all with Him forever.

Trusting the Hope He Has Prepared

For now, that is enough for us to know: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Cor. 2:9).

A Closing Reflection of Trust

When our understanding reaches its limit, faith teaches us to rest in the character of God. What He has revealed is enough to guide our obedience, strengthen our hope, and draw our hearts into praise. The secret things remain safely with Him, but the promises He has given belong to us. In those promises, we may walk with confidence until the day when we see more fully the glory He has prepared for those who love Him.

Lord, teach us to rest humbly in what You have revealed and to trust joyfully in all that remains safely in Your hands.
