With All Your Getting, Get Understanding

With all your getting, get understanding!

Gaining sound judgment (wisdom) during this time of uncertainty is key. With so many different opinions poured out daily via news and social media we must be wise and vigilant not to let earthly wisdom dictate our decision making.

Now, whatever else you do, follow through to understanding. Without wisdom and understanding on a matter we have a tendency to make decisions based upon how we feel and what we think according to our own understanding or man’s wisdom. Proverbs 4:7

Keep in mind that the world’s wisdom is sensual, earthly and demonic. The wisdom from above is is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. That’s why we are encouraged not to lean on our own understanding or follow earthly wisdom. James 3:13-17

Let’s go a little deeper in understanding of the world’s wisdom by looking at the definition of sensual and earthly from Dictionary.com

Sensual: pertaining to, inclined to, or preoccupied with the gratification of the senses or appetites; carnal; fleshly.

Earthly: of or relating to the earth, especially as opposed to heaven; worldly.

With these definitions in mind we are able to discern the truth and validity of what we hear or read. James gives us insight on the character and nature of many who harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in their hearts, and boast about it or deny the truth. Those who are wise and understanding will show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. James 3:13-14

Notes: All Scripture is taken from the New International Standard Bible (NASB) unless otherwise noted.
