Understanding Who We Are Through God’s Eyes
Have you ever wondered why you’re here, what your purpose is, or what makes your life truly valuable? These are questions just about everyone faces at some point. The truth is, many of us spend our lives searching for meaning, chasing after things that never quite fill the emptiness inside—things like money, success, or pleasure. But deep down, we may still feel that something is missing.
Looking for Meaning in All the Wrong Places
We live in a world that often encourages us to find our worth in our achievements, possessions, or even in what other people think of us. But this can leave us feeling empty and lost, because none of these things can truly satisfy our need for love, meaning, and significance.
According to the Bible, people have a natural longing for something bigger—something eternal. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says that God “has set eternity in the human heart.” This means that deep inside, we’re wired to look for a purpose that goes beyond just what we can see or touch.
God’s Love Gives Us Value
The Christian faith teaches that our true identity comes from God. The Bible says that God is love (1 John 4:8, 16). Because of this, He wanted to share His love with us. That’s why, according to John 3:16, God gave His only Son, Jesus, so that we could be reconnected with Him and discover our real purpose.
The Search for Identity
It’s common to look for our identity in things like jobs, relationships, or hobbies. Dr. Myles Munroe put it well: most people know they’re searching for something, but they don’t know what it is. Some chase after money or power, others seek fulfillment in relationships or careers. Some even turn to unhealthy habits or vices in their search. But the message of Christianity is that what we’re really searching for can only be found by knowing who we are in Christ.
The Good News: Jesus Shows Us Who We Are
Jesus came to bring us good news. He didn’t just offer a set of rules—He offered a relationship with God and a place in God’s “kingdom,” which isn’t about material things, but about “righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). God wants us to know that we are loved, forgiven, and have a purpose. Through Jesus, God offers us a new identity: we become God’s children, with a place in His family and an inheritance that lasts forever.
Living Out Our Identity
Living as God’s children means making choices that honor Him and reflect His love. That includes loving others, doing good, and avoiding things that hurt us or others. The Bible encourages us to pursue lives of kindness, honesty, and purity—living in a way that points others to the goodness of God.
God calls both men and women to live with dignity, modesty, and respect—not because He wants to take away our fun or individuality, but because He knows what’s best for us. He wants us to avoid things that pollute our hearts and minds, and instead, focus on things that are good, pure, and life-giving (Philippians 4:8).
A Call to Purpose and Hope
Finding your real identity starts by trusting Jesus and letting Him guide your life. Only then can you discover the true peace and joy that come from knowing you belong to God and have a purpose that matters for eternity. When we live this out, we help make our communities and our world a better place.
No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you matter to God. He created you with value, purpose, and a unique destiny. The journey to discover who you really are isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it—because in Christ, you find the love, meaning, and hope you’ve been searching for all along.
