We live in times where tensions are running high—between political parties, within communities, and sometimes even in the church. There’s a growing divide between liberals and conservatives in America, with each side believing the other is a threat to the nation’s well-being. But as Christians, it’s important to step back and reflect on what truly matters. While patriotism is not wrong, our first loyalty should always be to God and His righteousness.
Choosing God Above All
The Bible reminds us in Matthew 6:33: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.” This statement is a call to put God above our political or personal preferences. It’s easy to get caught up in the arguments and debates of the day, but we must not let them distract us from our ultimate purpose: to live for God and love others as Christ loved us.
Christ does not belong to one political party or another; He transcends these divisions. Our role as believers is not to champion earthly systems but to reflect His kingdom values—love, grace, truth, and righteousness—wherever we are.
The Danger of Division
Division can be a destructive force, not just in politics but also within the church. Matthew 24:12 warns us, “Because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” This verse reminds us of the challenges of living in a world that often prioritizes self-interest over love and unity. When we allow the spirit of division to take root, it can lead to bitterness, hostility, and a loss of focus on God’s mission.
We are called to be vigilant. The Bible speaks of “political leaven,” a subtle influence that can spread quickly and distract us from righteousness. Instead of falling into this trap, we’re urged to imitate God and walk in love, as Ephesians 5:1-2 says: “Be imitators of God as His dear children. Walk in love, as Christ also has loved you and given Himself for you.”
Shining as Children of Light
The church is meant to be a light in the darkness. Ephesians 5:8-14 encourages us to walk as children of light, demonstrating goodness, righteousness, and truth. When we choose to live this way, we expose and overcome the unfruitful works of darkness with the light of Christ.
This doesn’t mean ignoring the struggles and challenges around us—it means facing them with wisdom and grace. As Ephesians 5:15-21 reminds us, we should walk wisely, redeem the time, and seek God’s will. This involves being filled with the Spirit, uplifting one another with psalms and songs, and giving thanks to God in all circumstances.
A World in Need of Hope
In these challenging days, the world is desperate for hope and light. As followers of Christ, we have the incredible opportunity to share the glorious gospel—the good news of redemption and salvation. By living in love and unity, we can point others to Christ and fulfill God’s plan for mankind.
Let’s not forget: our mission is not to win arguments but to win hearts for God’s kingdom. We are called to be peacemakers, bridge-builders, and ambassadors of Christ’s love. When we walk in wisdom, love, and the light of Christ, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those around us.
So, even as the days grow darker, let us choose to walk in the light. Let us seek God’s wisdom, love one another deeply, and reflect His glory in all that we do. The world needs the light of Christ more than ever, and it’s up to us to shine brightly for His kingdom.
