Understanding the Importance of Spiritual Growth
Keeping on Track
Faith is a journey, not a destination. From the moment we begin to believe, we are called to grow and improve, much like a seed planted in fertile soil. Life in the Kingdom of God is never stagnant. Imagine a river flowing steadily—it brings life to everything it touches. In the same way, our faith must flow and grow. If it stops, it stagnates, and stagnation can lead to decay. This is why it’s crucial to stay on track, continually seeking to understand God’s word and His purpose for our lives.
Growth in faith isn’t just about learning more facts about God or memorizing scripture. It’s about deepening our relationship with Him, applying His teachings to our lives, and allowing His Spirit to transform us. It’s also about becoming a blessing to others—sharing God’s love, serving, and encouraging those around us.
Moving On to Maturity
What does it mean to move on to maturity? Think of maturity in faith as growing up spiritually. Just as a child learns the basics of walking, talking, and interacting with the world, believers start with the foundational teachings of the faith. These basics include repenting from sins, believing in God, and understanding concepts like baptism, laying on of hands, resurrection, and eternal judgment. These are essential building blocks, much like learning the ABCs in school. However, we are called to build upon them—to move beyond the foundations and create a strong and vibrant life in Jesus.
The writer of Hebrews explains this beautifully, urging believers to move forward and not linger on the basics. Growth means striving for spiritual maturity. While perfection may not be achievable in this life, maturity is within reach. Maturity is about becoming steady in faith, wise in understanding, and active in living out God’s love. As William Barclay said, “Teleiotes [the ancient Greek word for maturity] does not imply complete knowledge but a certain maturity in the Christian faith.”
What Maturity Looks Like
A mature believer:
· Lives with purpose, centered on Christ.
· Demonstrates patience, compassion, and forgiveness.
· Uses their gifts to serve others and glorify God.
· Discerns truth and applies biblical principles to everyday life.
This kind of maturity grows when we push beyond the basics of faith and delve deeper into God’s word, allowing it to shape our character and decisions.
A Warning to Discouraged Believers
For those who feel stuck or discouraged in their faith, the message is clear: there’s danger in staying stagnant. If you’ve tasted the goodness of God—the joy, hope, and power He offers—but then stop growing, it’s easy to drift away from Him. This isn’t just a matter of losing motivation; it can lead to spiritual decay, shame, and fruitlessness.
The writer of Hebrews warns against falling into this state. Life in God’s Kingdom demands growth. Either we grow and produce blessings—a life that reflects God’s love and goodness—or we descend into a state of barrenness, producing nothing but briars and brambles that serve no purpose. Jesus wants more for His people. He desires growth, joy, and purpose for each of us.
How to Move Forward
So, how can we move toward maturity, even when discouraged? Here are some practical steps:
· Keep your focus on Jesus: He is the anchor of your faith and the source of all wisdom.
· Study the Scriptures: Dive deeper into God’s word to understand His promises and direction for your life.
· Pray regularly: Communication with God keeps your heart aligned with His will.
· Join a faith community: Surround yourself with believers who will encourage and challenge you to grow.
· Serve others: Maturity in faith involves putting others first and sharing God’s love through action.
Remember, growth is a process. No one matures overnight, and setbacks don’t mean failure. Keep moving forward, trusting that God is faithful to guide and strengthen you.
The Call to Growth
The message of Hebrews 6:3 reminds us of an important truth: “God willing, we will move forward to further understanding.” This isn’t just a hope—it’s a promise. God is with us, willing and ready to help us grow if we’re open to His guidance.
