What Psalm 89:14 Teaches Us About National Greatness in God’s Eyes

When we look around at America today, many people feel concerned, tired, and even confused. We see division, anger, distrust, political fighting, social unrest, and families and communities struggling to understand one another. In times like these, it is easy to ask, “Where are we headed?” and “What does God want from us?”

Psalm 89:14 gives us a simple but powerful answer: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” In plain words, God’s rule is built on doing what is right and treating people fairly. Everything He does is surrounded by love and truth.

What Does God Value in a Nation?

God does not measure a nation’s greatness the way people often do. People may look at money, military strength, popularity, technology, or political power. But God looks deeper. He looks at whether people honor what is right, whether the vulnerable are treated fairly, whether truth is respected, and whether mercy is shown.

Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” That means right living lifts a nation up, but sin and corruption bring shame and trouble. A country may look strong on the outside, but if it loses righteousness, justice, mercy, and truth, its foundation becomes weak.

The Foundation: Righteousness and Justice

The word “throne” in Psalm 89:14 points to God’s authority. A throne represents rule, leadership, and power. But God’s throne is not held up by selfish ambition, fear, lies, or popularity. It is built on righteousness and justice.

Righteousness means doing what is right in God’s eyes. Justice means treating people fairly and not showing favoritism. Psalm 97:2 repeats this same truth: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.” God is showing us that true leadership, true strength, and true greatness must stand on what is right and fair.

This is important for us because no nation, church, family, or person can remain strong for long if the foundation is crooked. If a house is built on sand, it will eventually fall. Jesus taught this in Matthew 7:24–27 when He spoke about the wise man who built his house on the rock and the foolish man who built on sand.

Mercy and Truth Go Before God

Psalm 89:14 also says that steadfast love and faithfulness go before God. Some Bible translations use the words “mercy” and “truth.” This means that wherever God is at work, His love and His truth are present.

God is never just powerful. He is also loving. He is never loving in a way that ignores truth. He is both merciful and faithful. Exodus 34:6 describes the Lord as “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” That is the kind of God we can trust, even when the world feels unstable.

What America’s Turbulent Times Reveal

Difficult seasons often reveal what people are really trusting in. When things feel uncertain, we may look to political leaders, money, laws, movements, news outlets, or public opinion to save us. While laws, leaders, and institutions have a place, they cannot heal the deepest problems of the human heart.

America’s struggles remind us that we need more than arguments and quick fixes. We need repentance, humility, prayer, truth, compassion, and a return to God’s ways. Micah 6:8 says that the Lord requires us “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” That is not just a verse for leaders. It is a verse for all of us.

National Greatness in God’s Eyes

In God’s eyes, a great nation is not simply a rich nation, a loud nation, or a powerful nation. A great nation is one that honors righteousness, practices justice, protects the weak, tells the truth, shows mercy, and recognizes its need for God.

This begins with people. Nations are made up of families, communities, churches, and individual hearts. If we want righteousness and justice in the nation, we must first ask God to build those things in us. We cannot demand truth from others while excusing lies in ourselves. We cannot call for justice while refusing mercy. We cannot ask God to bless our land while ignoring His Word.

Trusting God When the Nation Feels Unsteady

Psalm 89 reminds us that God’s throne is still secure. Human governments rise and fall. Public opinions change. Leaders come and go. But God’s character does not change. He is still righteous. He is still just. He is still merciful. He is still faithful.

That is why believers do not have to live in fear. We can be concerned without being hopeless. We can speak truth without being hateful. We can work for justice without losing mercy. We can pray for our nation while keeping our eyes on the King whose throne cannot be shaken.

Hebrews 12:28 says we are receiving “a kingdom that cannot be shaken.” That means our deepest hope is not in any earthly system. Our hope is in God and His eternal Kingdom.

A Call to Reflection

As we watch the events of our country unfold, we should not only point fingers. We should also look in the mirror. Are we living with righteousness? Are we treating people with justice? Are we showing mercy? Are we walking in truth? Are we trusting God more than we trust human power?
