Understanding Christian Nationalism and Responding with the Heart of Jesus

What Is Christian Nationalism?

Christian nationalism is the idea that Christianity should be closely tied to a nation’s identity, laws, and politics. People who hold this view often believe that their country will only thrive if it follows Christian principles and that their faith should influence public life, government, and culture.

How Christian Nationalists Think

Many Christian nationalists are motivated by a desire to see their faith respected and protected in society. They may feel that their beliefs and traditions are under threat, and so they want laws and leaders who reflect their religious values. They often view America (or their country) as having a special relationship with God and believe that being a “Christian nation” is essential for blessings and prosperity.

Some people frame America—or their own country—as having a special relationship with God and see being a “Christian nation” as the key to blessing and prosperity, but Christianity is ultimately measured by how we live and reflect God’s heart for all people, not by political power, patriotism, or enforcing a particular social agenda. This mindset can lead people to focus on political power, patriotism, and shaping society to match their interpretation of Christian values. Sometimes, it can blur the line between following Jesus and promoting a certain political agenda.

Responding with Biblical Truth

The Bible teaches that God loves all people, regardless of nationality, race, or political affiliation. Jesus’ message was about loving God and loving others, not about building earthly kingdoms or political empires. He told His followers, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). This means our primary loyalty is to Jesus and His teachings—not to any particular nation or government.

The true gospel is about salvation through faith in Jesus, not about making a country Christian by force or law. The Apostle Paul wrote, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile… for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). Our identity as Christians comes from being children of God, not from our citizenship or politics. How to Counteract Christian Nationalism

  1. Focus on the Gospel: Share the good news that Jesus offers forgiveness and new life to everyone. The gospel isn’t about power, but about grace, mercy, and love.
  2. Promote Unity: Remind others that God’s family is global. Christians are called to love their neighbors—regardless of their background or beliefs.
  3. Seek Humility: Jesus taught humility and service, not pride or domination. Encourage a spirit of serving others rather than seeking control.
  4. Separate Faith from Politics: While it’s okay to vote and participate in society, don’t confuse following Jesus with supporting a particular party or agenda. Our faith should influence how we treat others, not just how we vote.
  5. Live Out Biblical Values: Let your life reflect the values of Jesus—compassion, justice, forgiveness, and love. Actions speak louder than words or political slogans.

The True Gospel Message

At its heart, the gospel is about God’s love for the world. Jesus came so that all people could know God, not just those in one country or culture. The Bible calls us to be peacemakers, to stand for truth, and to love even our enemies. The true gospel breaks down barriers, unites people, and points to Christ—not to any human kingdom.

By returning to the teachings of Jesus and the apostles, Christians can help ensure their message is rooted in biblical truth, not in political ambition. This is how we counteract Christian nationalism—with the love, humility, and truth of the gospel.

Ultimately, our faith should shape the way we live so that, as Christ’s witnesses, we demonstrate the healing power of the gospel and invite others to experience God’s love, drawing them closer to Christ and the heart of His message.
