Holding Fast to God’s Promises: How to Stand Firm When Faith Feels Tested

A Christian devotional on Hebrews 10:23, 2 Corinthians 1:20, and how believers hold on to God’s promises in difficult seasons

There are seasons when the promises of God can feel harder to hold than we expected. We know what Scripture says, yet our circumstances may seem to tell a different story. Delay, disappointment, and unanswered questions can test the heart deeply. But Hebrews 10:23 gives us this steady command: “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that promised.” The strength of our hope does not rest on how firmly we feel, but on the faithfulness of the God who has spoken.

God’s promises are trustworthy because they rest in His unchanging character. He does not lie, forget, or fail. Second Corinthians 1:20 says, “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen.” In Christ, every promise of God finds its certainty and fulfillment. This means we are not clinging to vague wishes or fragile optimism. We are resting in the Word of a faithful God who has bound His promises to His own name and confirmed them in His Son. What He has spoken is not weakened by time, difficulty, or delay.

Still, holding fast is often a battle. There are moments when what God has promised seems far away, and unbelief whispers that perhaps His Word will not come to pass. That is why Scripture often calls us to remember. Joshua 21:45 declares, “There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.” The people of God have always needed this reminder. The Lord has an unbroken record of faithfulness. What He has begun, He knows how to complete, even when the road between promise and fulfillment feels long.

The Lord has an unbroken record of faithfulness. What He has begun, He knows how to complete, even when the road between promise and fulfillment feels long.

As I reflect on this, I am reminded how often I want God’s promises to unfold on my timetable. There are moments when waiting stretches my faith and I feel how quickly my heart can drift toward fear. Yet the Lord has been so patient with me. Again and again, He has taught me that His faithfulness does not depend on how steady I feel, but on who He is. Even in the long seasons, He has never failed to keep me in His care.

Lord, when my heart is tempted to waver, help me to hold fast to Your promises. Strengthen my faith where it feels weak, and remind me that Your Word is truer than my fears. Teach me to trust You in the waiting, to rest in Your faithfulness, and to remember that You have never failed Your people. Keep my heart anchored in You, and let Your promises be my peace and hope each day. Amen.
