When God Feels Silent : A Christian Devotional on Trusting God

A Christian devotional on Psalm 13, Psalm 42, and how believers can trust God when heaven feels quiet

There are seasons in the Christian life when God feels painfully quiet. We pray, wait, listen, and still the answer seems delayed. In those moments, the silence can feel heavy enough to shake the heart. We may wonder whether God is near, whether He has heard us, or whether something has gone wrong. Scripture does not hide this experience. Psalm 13 begins with the honest cry, “How long, O Lord? Wilt thou forget me for ever?” These words remind us that the ache of divine silence is real, and that bringing that ache to God is not unbelief but a form of faith.

When God feels silent, it is tempting to assume that He is absent. But silence is not the same as abandonment. Psalm 42 shows the soul crying out in turmoil while still turning toward hope: “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? … hope thou in God.” The psalmist does not deny his sorrow, but he refuses to let sorrow have the final word. This is one of the great lessons of spiritual silence. Feelings may say that God is far away, yet His character remains unchanged. The quiet of heaven does not mean the heart of God has turned away.

Isaiah 50:10 offers a deeply needed word for such seasons: “Who is among you that feareth the Lord… that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.” There are times when believers walk in darkness not because they are outside God’s will, but because faith is being asked to rest on His character rather than on felt comfort. In those moments, we are not called to manufacture certainty for ourselves. We are called to lean our full weight on the God who sees clearly when we do not.

What should we do when God feels silent? We keep coming to Him honestly. The Psalms teach us to lament without pretending, to ask bold questions without walking away. We stay near to Scripture, because when fresh answers seem absent, God’s written Word remains steady. We continue in prayer even when it feels dry, because persistent prayer is itself an act of trust. We also remember what God has done before, both in Scripture and in our own lives. Silence may test faith, but it can also deepen it as we learn to seek God for who He is, not only for what He gives.

If you are in a long season where God feels silent, do not conclude that you are forgotten. Some of God’s deepest work is done where His hand is hidden. He may be strengthening roots that will not be visible until later. He may be teaching your heart to hope in Him more purely than before. The silence can be painful, but it is not meaningless. The God who sometimes seems quiet is still the God who keeps covenant, hears every cry, and knows exactly how to sustain the soul that waits for Him.

So when heaven feels quiet, do not stop seeking the Lord. Bring Him your questions, your sorrow, and your waiting heart. Let His Word hold you when your feelings cannot. And keep hoping in Him, even in the dark. In time, you will find that the God who seemed silent was never absent, and that even the quiet was held within His faithful love.

As I reflect on this, I think of how often I have wanted God to answer quickly and clearly, especially in seasons when my heart felt tired and unsure. Silence has not been easy for me. Yet I can see that some of the deepest lessons of trust have been learned in those quiet places, where I had nothing to lean on but the character of God. Even when I could not sense His nearness as I hoped, He was still faithfully holding me.
