One of the most dangerous things a nation can do is forget what once wounded it.
We can break free from destructive patterns, survive painful seasons, and learn hard lessons—only to be tempted to run right back to the same anger, pride, division, fear, and foolishness that hurt us before.
Scripture says, “As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.” Peter gives another picture: a washed pig going back to the mud. It is blunt because the truth is blunt: if something made us sick before, wisdom says stop going back to it.
Job 12:23 reminds us that God “makes nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them.” Nations rise under God’s hand, and nations fall when they forget Him, reject truth, normalize corruption, and call darkness light.
A nation does not usually collapse overnight. It weakens one compromise at a time.
Truth gets traded for noise. Justice gets traded for power. Unity gets traded for outrage. Freedom gets traded for fear. Conviction gets traded for convenience.
We say we want peace, but we keep feeding anger. We say we want unity, but we keep rewarding division. We say we want truth, but we keep applauding half-truths. We say we want freedom, but we keep bowing to pride, greed, bitterness, and fear.
A new slogan will not save us. A new leader will not heal what is still broken in the heart. A new image will not fix an old disease.
Real change begins with repentance. Not performance. Not excuses. Not pointing fingers. Repentance means turning around, telling the truth, and refusing to make peace with the very things that are pulling us backward.
If we want a stronger nation, we must become stronger people: humble enough to admit wrong, brave enough to reject old sins, honest enough to choose truth, and loving enough to seek justice and mercy together.
If God brought us through it, we have no business going back to it. Leave the mud behind. Leave the vomit behind. Learn the lesson. Walk forward.
