In a season when America feels shaken—politically, socially, spiritually, and morally—I have been asking a simple but serious question: What is forming our hearts?
Hebrews 12 reminds us that shaking can reveal what is temporary and what is eternal. Sometimes God allows shaking not to destroy us, but to show us what we have been leaning on.
One concern in this moment is how easily human ideology can begin to take the place of God’s Word. Political beliefs matter, and believers can care deeply about their country. But no political movement—left or right—should become the lens through which we read Scripture, see our neighbors, or define truth.
When fear, anger, resentment, nationalism, racial pride, or the desire to win shapes us more than Jesus, we may still use faith language, but our hearts can drift from the Spirit of Christ.
Romans 1:18–19 reminds us that people can suppress the truth and lose sight of what God has made known. That warning is not only for “others.” It is for all of us. We need Scripture to continually bring us back to the true character of God.
In a divided time, the church is called to be different—not louder, harsher, or more defensive, but more prayerful, truthful, compassionate, humble, and rooted in the fruit of the Spirit.
Jesus Christ—not nationalism, populism, political power, racial pride, or cultural fear—is our firm foundation. America may be shaking, but the kingdom of God is not.
So let us return to Scripture with humility, test every voice by the life and teachings of Jesus, and ask whether our convictions are producing His character in us.
What is forming our hearts right now—Scripture, prayer, and the Spirit of Christ, or fear, outrage, and political identity?
