Is Your God Too Small? Growing Your Faith in a Limitless God

“Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to.” —George Seaton

Seven years ago, while studying Knowing God by J. I. Packer, I paused over a statement in the chapter titled “The Majesty of God.” Packer observed that many people today have “small thoughts of God.” That sentence stayed with me and led me to ask a personal, honest question: Is my God too small?

As I reflected on that question, I remembered something the Lord impressed upon my heart years ago: “You never ask for big things.” Those words challenged me then, and they still challenge me now. Sometimes we say we believe God is great, yet we pray as if He is limited. We say He can do anything, but we often ask only for what feels safe, reasonable, or easy to explain.

But God is not small. He is not weak, confused, intimidated, or surprised by what is happening in our lives. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, wise, unchanging, holy, and majestic. We are limited by time, space, knowledge, strength, and resources, but God is not limited at all.

Romans 1:17 reminds us that the righteous live by faith. Faith is not simply how we begin our walk with God; faith is how we continue walking with Him. We move from one level of trust to another. As we grow spiritually, our view of God must grow as well. We cannot remain in the same place, praying small prayers, expecting small outcomes, and carrying a small picture of a limitless God.

Many people live with little or no faith because they have not yet discovered the true and living God. They may know about religion, church, or Bible verses, but they have not come to know Him as Father, Helper, Provider, Healer, Sustainer, and Keeper. When we begin to see God as He truly is, our faith begins to rise.

Colossians 1:17 says that Christ existed before all things and that all things are held together in Him. That means the same Lord who holds creation together is able to hold you together. He is able to hold your marriage, your children, your health, your relationships, your household, your finances, your career, and your ministry when you lean your whole life upon Him in trust.

God is bigger than our failures. He is bigger than our bills. He is bigger than our fears. He is bigger than our sins. His grace is greater than anything that has tried to defeat us. Psalm 73:26 reminds us that our flesh and heart may fail, but God is the strength of our heart and our portion forever.

The cares of this world can easily cloud our vision. Bills, sickness, family concerns, disappointments, fear, and uncertainty can cause us to forget how great God really is. Yet when we stay open to Him, we discover that His plan is larger than our past, stronger than our present struggle, and greater than anything we have imagined.

Scripture repeatedly points us back to the greatness of God. Psalm 145:3 declares, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.” Psalm 147:5 says, “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.” Isaiah 6:3 gives us the cry of heaven: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” These verses remind us that God is not average, ordinary, or limited. He is greater than we can fully comprehend.

So perhaps the question is not, “Can God do it?” Perhaps the deeper question is, “Will I trust Him enough to ask, believe, obey, and receive?” God has given us great and precious promises so that we can live as people who belong to Him. We were not created to live defeated under every circumstance. Our help comes from the Lord alone.

Today, let us ask God to stretch our faith. Let us stop reducing Him to the size of our problems. Let us stop measuring His power by our understanding. Let us believe Him for greater things—not because we are great, but because He is.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for the times I have thought too small of You. Help me to see You as You really are: holy, powerful, wise, loving, and faithful. Stretch my faith. Teach me to ask, trust, and believe according to Your greatness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
