Trusting God When Life Does Not Make Sense

There are seasons when life feels confusing, painful, and unfair. We look around and see suffering, disappointment, loss, and evil, and our hearts quietly wonder, “Lord, why would You allow this?” Those questions can feel heavy, and God is not surprised by our weakness. Yet even in those moments, He gently calls us to trust Him beyond what we can see or understand right now.

When we judge God only by what our eyes can see, peace can quickly slip away. Our view is limited, but His is perfect. We see one chapter; He sees the whole story. Faith does not mean pretending pain is not real. It means bringing our pain to the Lord and choosing to believe that His wisdom is greater, His love is steady, and His purposes are good—even when His ways are beyond our understanding.

This is often where faith is formed. Unbelief says, “If I were God, I would do things differently.” But faith bows humbly and says, “Lord, I do not understand this, but I trust You.” That kind of surrender does not always remove the hardship, but it gives the heart a place to rest. It reminds us that God’s wisdom is deeper than ours and His purposes reach farther than this present moment.

This is the comfort of God’s sovereignty: God is God, and He lovingly rules over all things. He is never surprised, never helpless, and never uncertain. He always does what is right, even when we cannot trace His hand. Scripture tells us that His judgments are “unsearchable” and His ways are “past finding out.” There will be times when we cannot explain what God is doing, but we can still cling to who He is.

The person of faith brings God into every situation. Instead of measuring life only by comfort, success, or what makes sense today, faith looks at life in the light of eternity. It whispers, “God is at work here, even if I cannot see how yet.” That kind of trust brings calm in the storm—not because the storm disappears, but because the soul is anchored in the Lord.

God’s sovereignty is not meant to make us cold or passive. It is meant to comfort us, humble us, strengthen us, and draw us nearer to Him. It teaches us to worship instead of argue, to obey instead of complain, and to pray with confidence instead of fear. If God is truly ruling over all things, then nothing in our lives is random, wasted, or outside His loving care.

So when life does not make sense, we do not have to join the world in accusing God. We can be honest about our pain while still resting in His wisdom. We can bring Him our tears, our questions, and our fears, and say, “Lord, I do not understand, but I know You are good. I know You are in control. Help me trust You one step at a time.”

That is not weakness. That is faith. And faith is what keeps the heart steady when the path ahead is unclear.

Prayer: Lord, when I cannot understand what You are doing, help me remember who You are. Quiet my anxious thoughts, strengthen my faith, and teach me to trust Your wisdom, Your goodness, and Your perfect care. Amen.
