While reading a news story about how President Trump may be hurting his own party, one thought kept coming to me: when a leader’s personal grievances become the main message, the whole nation pays a price.
This is not just a political problem. It is a spiritual one too. Government was never meant to be used as a stage for one person’s anger, pride, or need to settle scores. According to God’s word, leaders are supposed to serve the people, protect what is right, punish wrongdoing fairly, and seek the good of the nation.
In early 2021, Republicans had a real chance to win control of the U.S. Senate through the two Georgia runoff elections. But instead of making the election about policy, service, and what was best for the country, the message became centered on grievance over the 2020 election. That kind of message may stir emotions, but it does not build trust, heal division, or help voters look forward.
Romans 13:1 says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” This reminds us that government is serious business. Leaders are accountable not only to voters, but also to God for how they use authority.
Proverbs 29:2 says, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” In plain words, when leaders act with wisdom, justice, and humility, people are better off. But when leaders are driven by pride, anger, revenge, or selfish ambition, the people suffer.
Micah 6:8 gives us a simple picture of what God requires: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” That standard should matter in public life. A leader who constantly points people back to himself is moving in the opposite direction of humility.
The Bible also warns against selfish ambition. Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” That applies to ordinary people, and it should apply even more to those who hold power.
The president’s self-serving message will not help Republicans on the ballot if it keeps the focus on old wounds instead of present needs. More importantly, it will not help the nation. People need leaders who tell the truth, seek justice, encourage peace, and put the common good above personal revenge.
As believers, we should not measure leadership only by party loyalty. We should measure it by character, service, truth, humility, and concern for the people. Any government that becomes centered on one person’s grievances has lost sight of its God-given purpose.
