“Come unto me.” — Matthew 11:28
“Come unto me.” — Matthew 11:28
“Abide in me.” — John 15:4
Jesus begins with a simple invitation: “Come to Me.” That is such a comforting word. He is speaking to the tired, the burdened, the worried, and the overwhelmed. He is not saying, “Get yourself together first.” He is not saying, “Carry it a little longer.” He simply says, “Come.”
When we come to God, we come to Him like children coming to a good Father. We should come with respect, because He is Lord over heaven and earth. But we can also come with confidence, because He loves us, protects us, and gives us what we need. Jesus has all power in His hands, and through Him we come to know the Father’s love.
Jesus invites everyone who is tired, weighed down, guilty, afraid, or troubled to come to Him. Some people are burdened by worry. Some are chasing money, success, or pleasure and still feel empty. Some are trying hard to make themselves right with God. Others are hurting, tempted, or full of fear. Jesus speaks to all of them and says, “Come to Me, and I will give you rest.”
Coming to Jesus means we bring Him our sin, our pain, our worries, and our weakness. We trust that He loves us and is able to help us. He gives peace that the world cannot give. He gives rest deep in the heart.
But Jesus also tells us to take His yoke and learn from Him. That means we let Him lead us. We listen to His Word. We follow His way. His way may include sacrifice, but it is not harsh or cruel. His yoke is lined with love. When we walk with Him, He gives us strength, peace, and joy.
So why should a tired and burdened soul look anywhere else for rest? Let us come to Jesus every day. Let us come for forgiveness, help, peace, and strength. It is not enough to speak His name with our lips if our hearts are far from Him. He wants our hearts. He wants us close.
And when we come to Him, we find exactly what our hearts need: mercy, forgiveness, peace, and rest. Many of us can look back and say, “I’m so thankful I came to Jesus. He received me. He helped me. He loved me.”
But Jesus does not stop with “Come.” He also says, “Abide in Me.” In everyday words, He is saying, “Stay close to Me. Keep walking with Me. Don’t just come for a moment of relief and then go back to carrying life on your own.” Coming to Jesus is the beginning, but abiding in Jesus is how we keep walking with Him every day.
Why We Lose Our Joy
If we are honest, many of us know what it feels like to lose some of the joy we once had. Prayer may not feel as easy. Our love may not feel as strong. Peace may feel far away. And we may quietly wonder, “What happened? Why don’t I feel as close to the Lord as I used to?”
Often, the answer is not complicated. We have drifted from close fellowship with Jesus. The blessing was never meant to be separated from Him. The peace, joy, and strength we need are found as we stay near Him.
Come to Stay
When Jesus said, “Come unto Me,” He was not inviting us to stop by for a short visit. He was inviting us to come home. He wants to be part of our whole life—our work, our worries, our family, our choices, our joys, and even our struggles.
Think of a branch connected to a vine. The branch does not strain to create life on its own. It simply stays connected, and life flows into it. That is what Jesus is teaching us. We do not have to produce strength by ourselves. We receive it as we remain close to Him.
What It Means to Abide
So what does it mean to abide in Jesus? It means we keep trusting Him, not just once, but daily. We bring Him our burdens. We talk to Him honestly in prayer. We listen to His Word. We obey Him one step at a time. We depend on His strength instead of trying to make it on our own.
Abiding does not mean life suddenly becomes easy. It means we are no longer walking through life alone. His yoke is easy because His love holds us up. His burden is light because He carries us as we follow Him.
A Simple Call Today
So today, if you are weary, come to Jesus. And if you have already come to Him, stay close to Him. Don’t drift away from the One who saved you. Don’t try to carry what He has already invited you to bring to Him.
Come to Him for forgiveness. Stay with Him for strength. Come to Him for rest. Stay with Him for daily grace. Come when you are burdened, and stay when you are blessed.
Jesus is not only the door we enter for peace; He is the home where our souls are meant to live. If you have come to Him, keep abiding in Him. Stay near. Keep trusting. Keep leaning on His love. There is no safer or sweeter place to be than close to Christ.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me to come to You. Thank You for receiving me with love and mercy. Help me not to wander away or try to live in my own strength. Teach me to stay close to You each day, to trust You with every burden, and to rest in Your love. Amen.
