Have you ever been in a season that felt like it was dragging on forever? Maybe you were waiting for an answer, praying for relief, or trying to stay strong while life felt heavy. We have all had moments where we wondered, “Lord, how much longer?” That is why Matthew 24:22 gives us so much hope. Jesus said, “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” In other words, God knows how much His people can handle, and He has the power to shorten difficult seasons.
Jesus was saying that the trouble coming would be so terrible that if it lasted too long, no one would survive. The suffering would be too much. The destruction would be too great. But God, in His mercy, would not allow it to go on forever.
For the sake of His chosen people—those who believed and followed Him—God would shorten those difficult days. He would limit the suffering. He would not let the danger continue until everyone was destroyed.
In the historical setting, this points to the destruction of Jerusalem. The city was under attack, and the suffering was severe. Many people were in danger because of war, hunger, violence, and confusion inside the city. If the siege had lasted longer, even more people would have died.
But God allowed the time to be shortened. Even the Roman leader Titus wanted the siege to end quickly. The people inside the city also weakened themselves through division, fighting, and destroying their own food supplies. Because of all this, the city fell sooner than expected.
So the main point is this: God was still in control, even in a terrible time. He set limits on the suffering. He protected a remnant. He showed mercy by not allowing the destruction to continue longer than necessary.
Matthew 24:22 reminds us that God can shorten hard seasons. Trouble may come, but it cannot go beyond the boundaries God sets. For the sake of His people, God can step in, limit the pain, and bring the season to an end.
God Can Say, “Enough”
When Jesus talked about those days being “cut short,” He was talking about a time of serious trouble. But the good news is this: trouble does not get the final say. God does. He can step in and say, “That is enough.” He is not sitting back helplessly while things fall apart. He is still ruling, still watching, and still caring for His people.
That should encourage us. When God shortens a season, He is showing mercy. He is putting a limit on what could have gone further. Daniel 12:1 talks about a time of distress, but it also talks about deliverance. Revelation 7:14 speaks of people who come out of great tribulation. So yes, God may allow trouble for a while, but He also knows how to bring His people through it.
Our Times Are in God’s Hands
Most of us can only see what is right in front of us. We live one day, one prayer, and one decision at a time. But God sees the whole story from beginning to end. Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in your hands.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us that there is a time for everything. That means your life is not random. Your waiting season is not wasted. God knows when to open a door, close a door, slow something down, or move something forward.
God Is Not Late
Sometimes God feels slow to us, but He is never late. Second Peter 3:8 says that with the Lord, “a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” God is not limited by time the way we are. What looks delayed from our side may actually be perfectly timed from His side.
Think about Jesus. Galatians 4:4 says that “when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son.” Jesus did not come too early or too late. He came right on time. And the same God who timed the coming of Christ also knows the timing of your life. He knows when to make you wait, and He knows when to move suddenly.
God Uses Waiting, but He Can Also Move Quickly
Now, let’s be honest: waiting is not easy. But waiting is not always punishment. Sometimes it is preparation. Romans 5:3-4 says suffering can produce perseverance, character, and hope. James 1:4 says perseverance helps us become mature and complete. God can use time to build something in us before He changes what is around us.
But there are also moments when God moves faster than we expected. One day the door is closed, and the next day it opens. One day the burden feels heavy, and the next day there is relief. One day it looks delayed, and the next day God shifts the whole situation. When God decides the time is right, things can change quickly.
God Shortens Trouble Because He Is Merciful
This is where God’s mercy becomes so comforting. Lamentations 3:22-23 says His mercies are new every morning. Isaiah 30:18 says the Lord is a God of justice, and blessed are those who wait for Him. God sees what you are carrying. He sees the tears, the pressure, the questions, and the quiet battles. Nothing is hidden from Him.
Matthew 24:22 reminds us that God can limit how far trouble goes. The enemy may want fear, confusion, and pain to continue, but God sets boundaries. He can shorten the days for the sake of His people. That is mercy. That is protection. That is love.
We Still Have a Part to Play
At the same time, God’s control does not mean we just sit back and do nothing. Jesus told His followers in Matthew 24:4-13 to watch out for deception, endure hardship, and stay faithful. So while we trust God with the timing, we still pray. We still obey. We still keep our hearts steady. We still choose faith over fear.
Proverbs 16:9 says, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” That means we can make plans, but we should hold them with open hands. We walk forward in faith, and God guides the outcome.
Hope for the Person Who Is Tired of Waiting
So if you are tired of waiting, take heart. God has not forgotten you. He knows how long it has been. He knows what you have carried. First Corinthians 10:13 says God will not allow His people to be tempted beyond what they can bear, but will provide a way out. Isaiah 40:31 says those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength.
Habakkuk 2:3 says the vision waits for the appointed time. Even if it seems slow, we are told to wait for it. That is not always easy, but it is worth remembering: God knows the appointed time. He knows when to open the door. He knows when to bring relief. He knows when to accelerate what felt delayed.
Final Thought
So when we talk about God accelerating time, we are not saying God is rushing. We are saying He has authority over every season. He can shorten suffering, speed up deliverance, and bring His promise to pass at just the right moment. So do not lose heart. Your times are in God’s hands. What feels long to you is not beyond His control. And when He says the time is right, things can change quickly.
A Word of Encouragement for Today
As we look at the challenges facing our nation today, it can be easy to feel worried, tired, or unsure about the future. But Matthew 24:22 reminds us that God is still in control. He sees the trouble, He hears the prayers of His people, and He knows how long a hard season should last. Our hope is not in perfect conditions, strong economies, political answers, or human strength alone. Our hope is in the Lord, who holds all time in His hands.
So let us not give in to fear. Let us pray for our nation, love our neighbors, stand for truth, and keep trusting God. He can shorten seasons of trouble. He can bring peace where there is division. He can bring wisdom where there is confusion. And when the time is right, He can move quickly in ways we did not expect. No matter what we face, God has not lost control, and His people are never without hope.
