Scripture focus: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
The Bible gives a serious warning about pride. Pride is more than just feeling good about yourself. Pride is when a person thinks, “I know better than everyone else,” or “I do not need God’s help.” That kind of attitude can lead a person into trouble.
Proverbs 16:18 teaches that pride comes before destruction. In simple words, arrogance can lead to ruin. When people think they are better than others or believe they know everything, they can make big mistakes.
Pride Can Blind Us
A proud heart has blind spots. Proud people may not see danger because they trust only themselves. They may ignore correction, reject wise advice, and refuse to admit when they are wrong.
Romans 1:22 says, “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” This does not mean intelligence is bad. It means pride is dangerous. A person can be smart but still foolish if they refuse to listen to God.
True wisdom starts with humility. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” God is not impressed by a high opinion of ourselves. He looks for a heart that is willing to learn, repent, and follow His way.
The Bigger the Ego, the Harder the Fall
A high ego can make failure even harder. When someone builds their life on pride, status, power, or the praise of people, one fall can feel like everything has come crashing down.
Proverbs 16:19 says, “Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.” In simple words, it is better to be humble with little than to be proud with much gained the wrong way.
The book of Proverbs, written mostly by King Solomon, teaches wisdom and good choices. Again and again, Proverbs reminds us that wisdom is not just knowing facts. Wisdom is living in a way that honors God.
What Pride Can Do
- Pride can make us think we are always right.
- Pride can stop us from listening to wise correction.
- Pride can cause us to hurt others with our words and actions.
- Pride can make us trust ourselves more than God.
- Pride can turn wisdom into foolishness.
Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Pride brings shame, but humility opens the door to wisdom.
Practical Ways to Stay Humble
- Pray daily. Ask God to search your heart and remove pride. Psalm 139:23–24 says, “Search me, God, and know my heart.”
- Listen to correction. Do not reject advice just because it is hard to hear. Proverbs 12:1 says, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge.”
- Admit when you are wrong. Saying “I was wrong” is not weakness. It is wisdom.
- Give God the credit. Remember that every gift, talent, and opportunity comes from Him. James 1:17 says every good gift comes from above.
- Serve others. Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
- Keep learning. Sometimes the wisest thing a person can say is, “I do not know. I still have more to learn.”
A Simple Prayer
Lord, help me to walk in humility. Keep me from thinking I know everything. Teach me to listen, learn, and follow Your wisdom. Show me any pride in my heart, and help me trust You more than myself. Amen.
Final Thought
Pride says, “I already know.” Humility says, “Lord, teach me.” Pride leads to a fall, but humility keeps us close to God’s wisdom. Let us not only fear the pride we see in others. Let us ask God to protect us from pride in ourselves.
