The word gospel means “good news.” But the gospel is not just any good news. It is the good news of what God has done through Jesus Christ to save sinners. There is no more important question than this: What is the gospel? The answer matters because it tells us how we can be made right with God and receive eternal life.
The Bible warns us to take this seriously. Paul said that if anyone preaches a different gospel, that person is under God’s curse (Galatians 1:6–9). That is why we must not invent our own message. We must listen carefully to what God has already said in Scripture.
1. The Bad News: We Have Sinned Against God
Before we can understand why the gospel is good news, we must understand the bad news. God is holy, righteous, and perfect. We are not. Every person has sinned against God. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sin is not only doing bad things. Sin is rejecting God’s rule, breaking His commands, and living as if we belong to ourselves.
Because God is just, sin must be judged. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.” This means that our sin separates us from God and brings death, judgment, and eternal separation from Him. We cannot save ourselves by being religious, doing good works, or trying harder. Isaiah 64:6 says that even our righteous deeds are like filthy rags before a holy God.
2. The Good News: God Sent His Son
The gospel begins with God’s love and grace. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” God did not wait for us to climb up to Him. He came down to rescue us.
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who became truly human. John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live. He always obeyed the Father. He was tempted, yet He never sinned (Hebrews 4:15).
3. The Heart of the Gospel: Jesus Died and Rose Again
The clearest summary of the gospel is found in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4: “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” Jesus did not die by accident. He died as a substitute for sinners. He took the punishment we deserved.
Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” On the cross, Jesus paid the debt of sin. His blood was shed for forgiveness. Romans 5:8 says, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
But Jesus did not stay dead. God raised Him from the grave. The resurrection proves that Jesus is Lord, that His sacrifice was accepted, and that death has been defeated. Romans 4:25 says Jesus “was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.”
4. How Do We Receive This Good News?
We receive the gospel by repentance and faith. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). To repent means to turn from sin and turn to God. To believe means to trust in Jesus Christ alone to save us.
Faith is not simply knowing facts about Jesus. It is resting in Him. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.” We are not saved by our works, our church attendance, our giving, or our goodness. Ephesians 2:8–9 says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
5. Why Is the Gospel Good News?
The gospel is good news because through Jesus we receive forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), peace with God (Romans 5:1), new life (2 Corinthians 5:17), adoption into God’s family (John 1:12), and the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:7). The gospel does not merely tell us how to improve our lives. It tells us how God saves us from sin, judgment, and death.
Romans 1:16 says the gospel “is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” This means the gospel is not just advice. It is God’s saving message. It is not about what we can do for God, but about what God has done for us in Christ.
6. A Simple Summary of the Gospel
The gospel is this: We have sinned against a holy God and cannot save ourselves. But God, in His love, sent His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. Everyone who repents and believes in Him is forgiven, made right with God, and given eternal life.
So the question is not only, “What is the gospel?” The question is also, “Have I believed this gospel?” Jesus calls us to turn from sin and trust in Him. There is no other Savior. Acts 4:12 says, “There is salvation in no one else.” If we get the gospel wrong, we lose everything. But if we receive the true gospel by faith, we have hope, forgiveness, and life forever with God.
