Daily Reading – Day 12 Psalm 119:89-96

Lamedh

If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a word every 8 verses associated with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. David wrote this chapter in an acrostic poem and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship, and the importance of knowing and obeying God’s Word.  I thought it would be helpful at this time to stress the importance of daily reading of God’s Word. A brief summary of the meaning of each alphabetic is provided for more understanding of the meaning of the letter. God’s Word sustains us in all our life’s journey?

Lamedh or Lamed is the twelfth letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Lamed means to learn and to teach heart knowledge. It’s original meaning was to “prick, sting, incite, goad”. “The mind (heart) of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” (Prov. 18:15 NASB)

The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out. (NIV)

Proverbs 2:6 says, “The Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” This gift of wisdom is imparted by the Holy Spirit, in conjunction with God’s Word.

Psalm 119 attests to the established, eternal and enduring Truth of God’s Word. Understanding of the Word is essential, since all things are based on it, and without it, we perish in both time and eternity. God has revealed himself in the Scriptures, but also in his created universe. Because this general revelation is available in nature, all mankind can seek, study and apply many of God’s eternal principles, and this understanding is of utmost importance. Throughout the psalmist’s life the precepts of God’s eternal Truth have preserved him he last verse in this section makes a distinction between created things that are limited and the eternal (“boundless”) Truth of God.Knowing, understanding, and applying this boundless Truth in a universe with limits, delivers us and preserves our life in time and in eternity when the wicked seek to destroy it (95). This is the greatest Truth.

89 Forever, Lord,
Your word stands in heaven.
90 Your faithfulness continues throughout generations;
You established the earth, and it stands.
91 They stand this day by Your ordinances,
For all things are Your servants.
92 If Your Law had not been my delight,
Then I would have perished in my misery.
93 I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have revived me.
94 I am Yours, save me;
For I have sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked wait for me to destroy me;
I will diligently consider Your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection;
Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

In His Service,

Minister A. Francine Green
