The Bible and Free Will: Simple Explanation of Making Choices

How the Bible Says Our Decisions Matter

The Gift of Free Will

The Bible teaches that God gave us all free will—that’s the ability to make our own choices. We’re not programmed or forced; instead, we get to decide for ourselves what’s right or wrong, good or bad, which path to walk. This freedom is a precious gift, and God wants us to use it wisely.

Choosing Your Path

According to Scripture, life is like a crossroads. God puts two main paths before us: one leads to blessings and a full, meaningful life, and the other leads to hardship and separation from Him. Deuteronomy 30:19 puts it plainly: God says, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and a curse; therefore choose life.” God’s heart is for us to choose the path that brings hope and goodness.

What Happens Because of Our Choices

You Reap What You Sow

Think of life like planting seeds. If you plant kindness, honesty, and love, good things will grow in your life. But if you plant selfishness or hurt, you’ll end up with problems. The Bible teaches that our actions have real consequences—what we put in is what we get out.

Your Choices Shape Your Life

It’s not all about luck or chance. The Bible says the choices we make every day, big or small, shape who we become and what our future looks like. How we treat people, handle tough moments, and deal with temptations all steer our lives.

How to Make Smart, Godly Choices

·      Ask God for Help: Trust God with your decisions. Don’t just go by your own understanding—ask Him for guidance and trust that He’ll show you the way.

·      Pray for Wisdom: If you’re unsure what to do, ask God for wisdom. The Bible promises He gives it freely to anyone who asks.

·      Learn God’s Will: As you spend time reading the Bible and listening to God, you’ll get a better sense of what He wants for your life.

·      Choose What’s Right: God wants us to pick things that are good and honorable. Try to do what’s right, even when it’s hard.

·      Think About Others: Good choices aren’t just about ourselves—they affect others. The Bible encourages us to make choices that build up and help our community.

Examples in the Bible

·      Joshua 24:15: Joshua told the Israelites, “Choose this day whom you will serve.” He made it clear he was choosing God for himself and his family, and invited others to do the same.

·      Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” Not every choice that seems good is actually good for us.

·      Deuteronomy 30:19: God urges us, “Choose life.” He wants us to make choices that bring blessing and life.

Why Love and Heart Matter

The Bible is clear: choosing God isn’t just about checking off rules—it’s about loving Him deeply and honestly. God wants people who worship Him sincerely, not just out of habit. Joshua challenged the Israelites to truly decide who they would serve, and they responded by choosing to stick with God, inspired by Joshua’s example.

Final Thoughts

Every day, each of us faces choices. The Bible says these decisions are powerful—they shape our lives and even our destiny. God gave us free will so we could choose Him and the good life He offers, but He also lets us walk away if we wish. In the end, the Bible urges us to choose wisely, love deeply, and follow the path that leads to life.
