God created every person with a heart that worships. Deep inside, we all give our love, attention, trust, and devotion to something. The question is not whether we will worship. The real question is who or what has the first place in our hearts.
From the beginning, God made us for Himself. We were created to know Him, walk with Him, love Him, and bring Him glory. The Bible says, “All things were created by him, and for him” (Colossians 1:16, KJV). Our hearts will never be truly satisfied until God is in His rightful place.
Worship is more than singing songs or lifting our hands in church. Those things can be beautiful, but true worship is the surrender of our whole life to God. Paul wrote, “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1, KJV). Every choice, every thought, every word, and every act of obedience can become worship when it is offered to the Lord.
Because we were created to worship, our hearts are always reaching for something. If we do not worship the true and living God, we will give our hearts to something else. This happened many times in the Bible. Israel turned away from the Lord and served false gods. Judges 2:12-13 says they “forsook the Lord” and “served Baal and Ashtaroth” (KJV).
Today, most people may not bow down before carved images, but idolatry is still very real. An idol is anything that takes God’s place in our hearts. It may be money, success, relationships, careers, pleasure, entertainment, social media, sports, games, or even our own plans. Good things can become dangerous things when they become greater to us than God.
The Lord alone deserves first place. Jesus said, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10, KJV). God does not ask for a small corner of our hearts. He calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).
This is where we must pause and let the Lord search us. What do I think about the most? What do I run to for comfort? What do I fear losing? What receives my best time, energy, and attention? These questions can gently show us what may be sitting on the throne of our hearts.
Jesus taught, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21, KJV). Our hearts follow what we treasure. If Christ is our treasure, our hearts will be drawn closer to Him. If the world becomes our treasure, our hearts will slowly drift away.
The world promises satisfaction, but it cannot give lasting peace. Money can be lost. Pleasure fades. Success does not last. People can disappoint us. But Jesus gives what the world cannot give. In His presence there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). He alone can fill the empty places of the soul.
That is why our eyes must return to Christ again and again. Colossians 3:1-2 says, “seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (KJV). Each day, we must ask the Lord to lift our hearts above temporary things and fix them on eternal things.
Guarding the Heart in Worship
The Bible says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23, KJV). Guarding our hearts means watching carefully over what we love, what we trust, and what we allow to shape us. It means asking God to help us see anything that is pulling us away from Him.
We guard our hearts by spending time with God. Prayer, Bible reading, worship, and obedience keep our hearts close to Him. James 4:8 says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you” (KJV). The more we draw near to the Lord, the less power idols have over us.
We also guard our hearts by turning away from anything that competes with God. Some things may not be sinful by themselves, but they can become harmful if they begin to control us. John warned, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols” (1 John 5:21, KJV). Sometimes the most loving thing God can do is show us what we need to surrender.
We guard our hearts by choosing to worship God every day. Worship is not only for Sunday. We worship when we trust God in difficulty, obey Him when it is hard, thank Him in ordinary moments, serve others with love, forgive as He forgave us, and live for His glory. Psalm 95:6 says, “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker” (KJV).
We were created to worship, and only God is worthy of our worship. He made us, He loves us, and through Christ He has saved us. Today, may we give Him the first place in our hearts. May we lay down every idol and say with sincere worship, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power” (Revelation 4:11, KJV).
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and show me anything that has taken Your place. Help me to love You more than the things of this world. Teach me to worship You not only with my words, but with my whole life. Keep my heart close to You, and help me live each day for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
