Every day, we make choices about what matters most. We decide whether to rest or keep working, whether to spend time on our goals or get distracted by what feels urgent in the moment. That is really what a priority is: the thing we place first because we believe it matters most. The book of Haggai gives a simple but powerful message about priorities, and it still speaks clearly to life today. It asks a question many of us need to hear: Are we giving our best energy to what truly matters?
Why Haggai Matters
Haggai was a prophet who spoke to God’s people after they had returned from exile to Jerusalem. They had started rebuilding the temple, but then they stopped for many years. Life became busy. People focused on fixing up their own homes and taking care of their own needs, while the house of God was left unfinished. Through Haggai, God told the people to “consider your ways,” which means to stop and honestly look at how they were living and what they were putting first.
When Good Things Become Bigger Than the Best Thing
The message of Haggai is not that work, home, or daily responsibilities are bad. Those things matter. The problem comes when good things take the place of the best thing. The people in Haggai’s day were not refusing to work hard. They were simply giving first place to their own comfort and security, while pushing God to the side. That is still easy to do today. We can become so busy earning a living, paying bills, managing schedules, and chasing success that we leave little room for prayer, worship, service, or reflection.
Haggai points out that when people ignore God, life can start to feel frustrating and empty. They were working hard, but not feeling satisfied. They were planting, earning, and striving, yet things still felt like they were slipping through their fingers. The message is deeply practical: when our lives are out of order spiritually, the rest of life often feels out of order too. Haggai reminds us that success on the outside does not always mean peace on the inside.
What This Means for Us Today
Haggai’s message is not just about an ancient building project. It is about the condition of the heart. It asks us to slow down and think: What is driving my choices? What gets my first attention, my first energy, and my deepest commitment? Many people live by reacting to whatever feels urgent, but Haggai calls us to live with intention. He challenges us to make God more than an afterthought and to put spiritual priorities back at the center of life.
· Set aside regular time for prayer and Scripture before the day gets crowded.
· Ask whether your schedule reflects what you say matters most.
· Make room to serve others instead of living only for personal comfort.
· Pause often and honestly “consider your ways.”
A Gentle but Urgent Wake-Up Call
That is why Haggai is so important. It is a short book, but it asks a life-changing question: What comes first in your life? It reminds us that priorities shape everything else. When we put God first, we are not ignoring the real duties of life. We are giving those duties the right order and the right meaning. Haggai does not just challenge us; it also offers hope. No matter how distracted or delayed we have been, we can always stop, reconsider, and begin again with the right priorities.
