Holiness is one of the clearest windows into the heart of God. In simple terms, holiness means being set apart, sacred, and wholly belonging to Him. Whatever God touches with His presence is no longer ordinary. It becomes holy because He is there. That is the wonder of holiness: it is not merely a religious idea, but the beauty of God’s own presence resting on a person, a place, or a life.
We see this beautifully in the story of Moses. When God called to him from the burning bush, He told Moses to remove his sandals because the ground beneath him was holy. Why was it holy? Because God was there. The soil itself had not changed, but everything changed when the presence of God filled that place. In the same way, holiness does not begin with a building, a ceremony, or an outward act. Holiness begins wherever God makes Himself known.
This truth speaks deeply into our everyday lives. Many people think of work, school, errands, and daily responsibilities as separate from the things of God. Yet if you belong to Christ, the Spirit of God lives in you. That means wherever you go, His presence goes with you. Your workplace can become a place of grace. Your home can become a place of peace. Even the most ordinary moments can become sacred when they are lived in fellowship with the Lord.
This is why the promise of Ezekiel is so precious: God gives His people a new heart and puts His Spirit within them. Holiness is not something we manufacture by trying harder or appearing more spiritual. It is the work of God within us. He reshapes our desires, softens our hearts, and gives us the strength to walk in His ways. True holiness grows out of surrender, not self-effort; it is the life of God blooming within the soul.
Because of this, there is truly no place a believer stands that is merely ordinary. If God dwells in us, then every place becomes an opportunity to reveal Him. The people we meet each day should encounter more than our personality, our opinions, or our strength—they should sense the kindness, peace, and truth of Christ flowing through us. We are not holy because of our own goodness, but because the Holy One has chosen to dwell in us.
Holiness also means being set apart from the spirit of the world. Scripture lifts our eyes to heaven, where the angels cry out without ceasing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty.” God is utterly pure, righteous, and glorious. His holiness is not only separation from sin; it is the radiant beauty of all that He is. Everything about Him is perfect. Everything He speaks is true. Everything He does is good. To behold His holiness is to stand in awe of His majesty and His moral beauty.
That is why a holy life is not a cold, gloomy, or joyless life. It is not about pretending to be better than others or withdrawing from the world in pride. A holy life is a beautiful life—one shaped by truth, humility, purity, love, and obedience. It is a life that rises above the world’s standards while remaining deeply present in the world as a witness to Christ. Holiness is not harshness; it is Christlikeness.
We cannot live this way by ourselves. Paul reminds us that Christ has become for us wisdom, righteousness, holiness, and redemption. In other words, holiness is found in Jesus. The closer we walk with Him, the more our lives begin to reflect Him. As we surrender to Him daily, He teaches us to think, speak, and act in ways that reveal His presence.
God’s way of holiness is not about trying to look religious on the outside. It is about being filled with His presence on the inside. When God is in us, our lives become set apart for His use. Every conversation, every responsibility, and every place we go can become holy ground because He is there. The call to holiness is really a call to live close to Jesus and let His life shine through us every day.
