Disciplines of the Spirit: Simple Spiritual Practices for Everyday Christian Life Part 2

Living These Disciplines with Grace and Purpose

The Bible teaches that spiritual discipline helps us become more like Christ. Prayer, fasting, Scripture, worship, service, generosity, and obedience are all ways we practice walking with God. Hebrews 12:5–11 also reminds us that God’s discipline, though sometimes difficult, is a sign of His love. Like a good parent, God corrects us to help us grow.

Spiritual discipline is not about becoming proud or acting better than others. It is about surrender. It helps us let go of sin, grow in self-control, and bear the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Philippians 2:13 reminds us that God is the One working in us, giving us both the desire and the strength to do what pleases Him.

That means we give effort, but we do not depend only on ourselves. We pray, study, serve, and obey while trusting God’s grace to change us from the inside out. Spiritual growth takes time. Like a garden, the soul needs steady care, patience, and the right conditions to grow.

Simple Principles for Disciplining Your Spirit

  • Receive God’s correction. When God shows you something that needs to change, do not run from it. Let Him teach you.
  • Practice self-control. Learn to pause before speaking, reacting, spending, or giving in to harmful habits.
  • Renew your mind. Fill your thoughts with truth instead of fear, bitterness, or whatever the world says is normal.
  • Care for your body and mind. Rest, healthy habits, and wise choices can support your spiritual life.
  • Make time for God. Prayer, Scripture, worship, and quiet reflection do not happen by accident. We have to make room for them.
  • Turn away from sin. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you let go of habits and desires that pull you away from God.
  • Depend on the Holy Spirit. Real spiritual growth comes from God’s power working in us, not just human willpower.

Conclusion: Tend the Garden Within

Practicing the disciplines of the Spirit is like tending a garden inside your heart. You do not see all the growth at once, but steady care makes a difference. Through prayer, meditation, study, fasting, service, and reflection, we make room for God to shape us. Over time, these simple practices help us grow in peace, wisdom, compassion, self-control, and love. One small step at a time, God nurtures the inner self and teaches us to live more like Christ.
