“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23
Jesus said, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks” (John 4:23). In simple terms, Jesus was teaching that true worship is not just about a place, a song, a service, or a religious routine. True worship starts in the heart.
In John 4, Jesus was speaking to the woman at the well. There was a long history of division between Jews and Samaritans, and they disagreed about the right place to worship. But Jesus showed her that worship was not mainly about a mountain or a temple. God was doing something new. Through Jesus, people would be able to come to the Father in a personal and living way.
When Jesus said the Father is looking for true worshipers, He was talking about people who truly love God, not people who only go through outward motions. Isaiah 29:13 warns about honoring God with our lips while our hearts are far from Him. God is not impressed by empty religion. He desires sincere hearts that love Him, trust Him, and obey Him.
Worshiping in Spirit
To worship in spirit means we bring God our real selves. It is not just singing the right words while our hearts are far away. It is coming before Him with love, humility, gratitude, and faith. The Holy Spirit helps us pray, strengthens us when we are weak, and reminds us that we belong to God (Romans 8:9-16). We can worship at church, at home, at work, or even in a difficult season when our hearts are turned toward the Lord.
Worshiping in Truth
To worship in truth means we worship God for who He really is. Our worship must be based on the truth of Scripture, not only on feelings, opinions, or personal ideas. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). When our worship is rooted in truth, it affects more than our words. It shows up in our obedience, our choices, our love for others, and the way we live before God each day.
The woman at the well came to Jesus with a past, questions, and confusion. But Jesus did not reject her. He met her with grace and led her to the truth. This is good news for us too. Our past does not disqualify us from coming to Jesus. When we come honestly, He meets us with mercy, gives us living water, and teaches us how to worship the Father from the heart.
True worship is more than what we do on Sunday. It is how we love God, trust Him, obey Him, and seek Him every day. The Father is still looking for worshipers who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. May we be people whose worship is not just heard in our songs, but seen in our surrendered lives.
Prayer: Father, teach me to worship You in spirit and in truth. Remove anything in me that is only routine or outward appearance. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, guide me by Your Word, and help me offer You a heart that is sincere, humble, and fully surrendered. Amen.
