In challenging times like these, we need to be careful about what we hear and read. When political conversations become “us versus them,” it is easy to focus on who is right and forget how we are treating one another.
Jesus said, “Consider carefully what you hear” (Mark 4:24). His words invite us to slow down and listen closely to His teaching. Understanding grows when we give His words our attention and put them into practice—not just when we hear them and move on.
Before we believe a headline, share a post, or repeat a claim, we can pause and ask: Is this true? Have I taken time to check it? Am I willing to listen, even when the answer challenges what I already believe?
Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us that the human heart can deceive us. That warning is not just about people on the other side of an argument. It is about us, too. We can mistake anger for truth, pride for conviction, or loyalty to a group for faithfulness to God. A strong feeling does not make us right.
We cannot see everything in another person’s heart. Rather than assuming the worst about others, we can ask God to show us what needs to change in our own hearts. We can listen with humility, speak honestly, and offer the same fairness and grace we hope to receive.
Guarding our hearts means making room for God’s Word, asking the Holy Spirit for guidance, and being willing to admit when we are wrong. It means turning away from what feeds bitterness and choosing words and actions that reflect Christ. We can disagree without treating another person as an enemy.
Our hope belongs in God—not in a political side or in our own ability to figure everything out. As we listen to Him and live out what we learn, we can grow in wisdom and become a light to others.
Before you react, pause. Before you share, check. Before you judge someone else’s heart, ask God to examine your own.
Lord, help us recognize what is true, listen with humility, and treat others with love. Show us where our hearts need to change, and give us the courage to follow You. Amen.
