Christian faith grows when people hear the true message of Jesus Christ. The gospel is the good news that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, rose again, and offers salvation to all who believe in Him (1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Romans 10:9–10).
Paul said, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). If the gospel is not preached clearly, people may come to church, hear many messages, and still never understand why they need Jesus.
When preaching moves away from Christ, sin, repentance, grace, and salvation, the church becomes weak. People may hear words that make them feel better, but they may not be led to the cross. A message that does not point people to Jesus cannot give lasting life.
Paul told Timothy, “Preach the word” and to do it with patience and careful teaching (2 Timothy 4:2). He also warned that a time would come when people would not want sound teaching, but would look for teachers who tell them what they want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
Why Sound Doctrine Matters
Sound doctrine means healthy and truthful teaching from the Bible. It teaches us who God is, who Jesus is, what salvation means, and how believers should live. Titus was told, “Teach what accords with sound doctrine” (Titus 2:1). Without sound doctrine, believers can become confused and easily misled. Ephesians 4:14 says we should not be like children, tossed back and forth by every wind of teaching. God wants His people to grow strong in truth.
Scripture is useful for teaching, correction, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17). When the whole counsel of God is not taught, people may remain spiritually immature. They may love God sincerely but not know how to stand firm, discern truth, or live faithfully in hard times.
When Truth Is Missing
False teaching grows where sound teaching is missing. Church leaders are called to hold firmly to the trustworthy word, encourage others by sound doctrine, and correct those who oppose it (Titus 1:9). This is not about winning arguments. It is about protecting God’s people and keeping the focus on Christ.
The answer is not to entertain people more, but to return to the gospel and the Word of God. Churches need preaching that lifts up Jesus, teaches repentance and faith, explains grace, and helps believers obey God.
Teachers must also watch their own lives and teaching closely, because doing so helps both themselves and those who hear them (1 Timothy 4:16). The message and the messenger both matter.
A Call to Return to the Gospel
When the gospel is preached and sound doctrine is taught, faith is strengthened. Believers grow in truth, love, holiness, and hope. The church becomes healthier because it is built on Christ and His Word, not on opinions, trends, or feelings.
We must pray for churches, pastors, and teachers to faithfully proclaim the message of Jesus. We must also ask God to give us hearts that love truth, receive correction, and obey His Word.
May the gospel be preached clearly. May sound doctrine be taught faithfully. May many believe, grow, and stand firm in Jesus Christ.
